View Full Version : Oh My God!

I am sitting in my backyard as I write this, enjoying an absolutely wonderful morning.
The sun out, the temperature is not too hot, not too cold. The birds are singing, the children are playing in their yard (three houses away).
They're all laughing, talking loudly, when all of a sudden one of the girls(I'm guessing 8-12 yrs old) yells out...Oh my god!!!
Was someone hurt? Did an accident happen? NO. It is just an all to common phrase heard nowadays. From little children to adults. It seems I hear it constantly throughout the day.
I have even seen it here, on this board as-OMG.
Now I realise it is a title, not a personal name but I do not use the phrase at all.
The questions I have is it a non-issue? Does anyone here use it in their speech?
brotherly love,
James

It is very flippant to my ears. I guess the one that see the heart gauges it per case ~ Thomas said My Lord `````````````my God ! and you might find similar expressive phrasing of exclaimation in the scriptures. I tend not to say it. I would guess its a habit for some.
I tend to use wordages that altogether don`t exist.

The only thing I can say is that the equivalent of the expression "Oh My God!" in my language is definitely not acceptable for a Christian, imho, unless it's directed to God of course.
The absolutely best American expression I've ever heard is "Good Gravy!". It's perfect, says it all. I probably don't know what it means, but I love it.

Yup, that's the best thing since sliced bread and American as apple pie.

I am a major OMG abuser: Oh My Goodness!
And I say "Sugar" instead of Sh**.
My children say "Flip" for expletives. It does sound better to the brain to tell someone to "Flip off!" You could imagine them doing a back flip (in some cases of a high building!) The other vulgar word always popped a dirty image in my mind.
My kids and I have discussed this matter, frequently. I had the hardest time getting my boys to quit calling each other and their friends, "Gay or faggot". It is very common in North Georgia to call guys those names. Its a big redneck thing. When we moved to South Alabama this year, I asked about this issue at the school and they said its very common in middle school and they usually outgrow it by high school. My eleven year old son was very upset about the name calling here. He said in Georgia it was a joke. Here, they really mean it. He was teased for the way he talks, his hair, everything they could find to insinuate that he was gay. I watched in torment for weeks until he finally conquered. Finally, those words are becoming a distant memory.
Now, kids talking in letters instead of words has become the new trend. IDK what to do! I do watch for POS or PIR. (Parents over shoulder or parents in room).
Love, Deborah

I had to use pronounced letters with my daughter as her little pooch listens to everything!
“When are you going to take your D.O.G. for a W.A.L.K in the P.A.R.K” ?
And now it’s really annoying as he can spell better than she can!
