1Corinthians 14:34, 35 Let the women KEEP SILENT IN THE CONGREGATIONS , for it is NOT PERMITTED for them to speak, but let them be in subjection, even as the Law says. If, then they want to learn something, let them question their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in a congregation.
These two scriptures have been rolling around in my mind for years. What do you feel is really being suggested here?
I have taken into consideration the Corinthian culture at the time Paul was speaking, and the things that were going on at that time, as well as the the surrounding scriptures, etc., but how do these scriptures apply in our day do you think?
I would really enjoy your expressions :ban_dance01: :y: :D

I don't really understand why, and who am I to argue Jehovah's arrangement.
Maybe it's because the 1914 debacle had to happen and the women would have been too smart to let it happen.
And maybe they would have gotten a few of the prophecies right.

IMHO
we have GODS arrangement that man is head of the woman, so i assume this also applys with teaching in the cong. If there is a shortage of mature brothers ,
i know years ago in some places, that sisters took care of the literture but had to wear a head covering, some even conducting group book studies untill a brother was sent in.
In deep respect she was caring for a arrangement meant for a brother. and took this very seriously. This would be when there was a shortage of qualified brothers. The sisters were eventually replaced. 'I am sure the society is aware that many sisters are very in depth spititually, other wise the GB would have never assigned Barabra Anderson to do research for some of their WT studies.

While it's true that women shouldn't teach in the congregation, as per God's arrangement given to us by Paul, I do wonder where Romans 16:1 factors into this, where Phoebe is mentioned, who was a minister (Greek diakonos, implying she was a deacon, or ministerial servant). Add to that the many female prophets spoken of in the Bible, and Deborah the judge, and I come to the conclusion that the current role of women in the congregation could be expanded a bit, to include ministerial tasks - perhaps minus the teaching. I know it might sound a bit radical to some, but as it is now, with sisters doing parts in the theocratic ministry school, 1 Corinthians 14:34 isn't strictly applied anyway, and perhaps Paul just gave this specific advice for the Corinthian congregation.

I think we have to look at the times Paul lived in. In Corinth there was a huge pagan following of the different gods. Women served as prophetesses and held power in some of these temples. I think he was trying to make sure the congregation didn't get caught up like these temples.
It is important to note that Jesus did not have women as his Apostles, but it did not hold him back from giving 120 of his followers holy spirit which included women. And there are women that do make up the 144,000 and they are given the same reward as men.
I think women hold a very important role in our congregations today. they are usually the only ones who go out in service and make up a huge number of the pioneer body. I am unsure how it would be if they were made MS's or elders but I have a feeling these are positions women don't really want. I could be mistaken.
I do know some sisters that could seriously hold their own, knowledge-wise, on equal terms or higher with brothers. Some were even smarter then some elders I know.
I think Paul makes some references to some very intelligent women in his letters.

As said by Stayawake, its probably something to do with the whole spiritual heiracy, starting with Jehovah who then goes through Jesus, who then goes to those annointed in the covernent for the Kingdom with him who then go to the great crowd, initial via the Brothers speacking from the platform.
Having said that, there are annointed females, though maybe the annoined all become sexless when they take up thier roles in Heaven.
Maybe Women are at the bottom of this particular ladder due to thier having been created for man, not man created for Woman?
Maybe its got something to do with Women having to cover thier heads when they must be used, "for the sake of the Angels"
There is surely more going on here than has been revealed to mankind.
But dont feel lowly you Women, for there are other ladders where you are at the top!
Well, folks, I would like to speak my mind here, but since I stated my position on the former board and I got the impression that some of the feministas didn't like it, I think I had better save myself a lot of writing before I end up in trouble!

Ditto here Nash. I think that this is just one of those threads that a wise Brother would be better off letting the Sisters comment on, if he knew what was good for himself!

Thank you all so much. I really do not disagree totally with how the org presently looks at this scripture.
I do sometimes have inner turmoil on how we/women are treated or talked to in some situatuions in the org, and my whole presence sometimes just kinda folds up when I observe how some husbands interact with their wives. But that is a different topic. (Headship/subjection, etc)
I watch folks and I am a LISTENER . And I have to tell you behavior tells me more about a person than all the words they speak, or what they try to present to the public as to whom they are. hmmmmm. But again that is a different subject. (smiling)
Thank you for your input. I learn a great deal from our loving expressions that we share with each other here.
Nash, Nambo I was not trying to set any one up. (laughing) You two are so funny. Love to you both. I just wanted to get some of the boards input to compare with my little thoughts.
I respect both of you very much. OKEY DOKEY
HOLD ON TIGHT NOW EVERYONE

There are many who believe that the bible is Patriarchal, however we have to get this in context. Nowhere in the bible are women discredited, in fact they are praised throughout. The issue is with men and their inability to manage their own headship. Christ set the example of headship as far as the congregation is concerned and male's need to follow it.
As for women speaking and teaching I think they do a marvellous job in the congregation by their conduct and their comments. They give well thought-out answers and are far more studious than their male counterparts. Even though there are things I don't understand in the bible I tend not to question Jehovah on matters as I believe he knows best.

The bible states that women shouldn't teach in the congs... but that doesn't mean we can't learn from them... how to fry bacon and eggs... how to wash and fold clothes... how to sweep... I sure do admire my wife getting up at 3am to feed the baby... I love that woman...
;) I'm sorry y'all, I was raised by 3 women, all with female friends. The last time I had the bathroom to myself was 1983  ..... and I have to let loose sometimes... :36: oink oink baby!!

Going back to the garden of Eden we find an interesting situation when God created man and woman
2:15 and Jehovah God proceeded to take man and to settle him in the garden of eden to cultivate it and to take care of it
v 16 & 17 are interesting because they indicate that Jehovah laid the command of which trees that could be enjoyed and v 17 which tree could not ,and the penalty of breaking the command
note Eve had not been created yet
therefore is it correct to assume that Eve gained this knowledge which she rebuked satan with in Genesis 3 v2 &3 from Adam and not directly from Jehovah ?
does this show an order of command structure?
it is also noticable what Jehovah said about the introduction of the woman in Genesis 2:18
" it is not good for the man to continue by himself. I am going to make a helper for him as a complement of him"
Jehovah displays balance in all his creation this earth is finely tuned for the existance of life
likewise Adam and Eve were Finely tuned for life.
should women speak in the congregations?
in those early congregations all persons seemed to be annointed and therefore yes possible Pauls words were correct for that time.
However today i think anyone annointed must speak as thay may be the only annionted voice among many potential other sheep.
just my thoughts Elihu
