Good Morning All,

Did anyone happen to catch last night's Conan O' Brian show? He had Bill Maher on the show who was promoting his new movie. I can't recall the name of the film but it is about Bill Maher going around talking to people about their religion. He was asked by Conan if he was an Atheist because he did not believe in God or religion. He said he doesn't like the term "Atheist" but he doesn't believe in there being a higher power. He also made statements such as
"I think religion is silly and destructive, and I think it's about time somebody said it..."

"you can't be a rational person six days a week…and on one day of the week, go to a building, and think you're drinking the blood of a two thousand year old space god. That doesn't make you a person of faith -- that makes you a schizophrenic!"

"If there was a God, why wouldn't he just come down and say It's me, I'm God and the correct religion is...."

I have heard that this is not his first time making such comments or letting the world know of his non belief. This however, is the first time that I have personally heard him publically say something about it and it got me to thinking how would I witness to him.

As Jehovah's Witnesses how would some of you reply to someone like this if you came across them in field service or work or informal witnessing? What scriptures would you use to prove Jehovah and Jesus exist and that the Bible is not just a big Fairy Tale story book? :D

I wouldn't bother to reply to such a person.

He wants God to talk directly to him. He will not believe in the bible so its a waste of time.

In this sense God did indeed come down and say Hello I am God, this is the true religion. Its just that he doesn`t do it on demand and he leaves it up to you to fathom the liar.

(Although he may help you with the tools if you begin to recognise him out of faith)

If you were ever given the oppertunity I would just say
" I know exactly why you feel as you do then quote from,1Cor 2:14, then open your bible and read it,
then say no offence , as you don't belive this either, but you see I do.
then just smile.

Hello bimp5,

First off, as Da.Furious said, the Bible will not hold much credence, if any, with a devout atheist. Although, I don't think that the worthwhileness of an undertaking lies in its success rate, ie., the amount of atheists that you may convert to Christianity. Preaching the Gospel is worthwhile simply because it is in obedience to Jehovah's command, and thus it's own reward.

Like Jinn mentioned, there are differences between atheists as well. Some, in my experience, are as dedicated to truth as are those who are devout believers. The difference lies in their authority.

The atheist places no authority in the Scriptures, so using Scriptures to prove Jehovah's existence will most likely provide a dead end. Generally speaking, an atheist's greatest authority is his own mind. So, trying to reason from a logical standpoint might serve more useful. One point to keep in mind is that it is not possible to prove God's existence empirically, that is, through artifacts or documents or experiments and their results.

C. S. Lewis provides a most powerful dissertation on God's existence, and also provides a unique perspective, in that he himself was a converted atheist. His book Mere Christianity gives such a great testimony to the existence of God; and the amazing thing about it is this: Lewis does not use the Bible in his logical run from an examination of everyday life to what Paul called the "inexcusable" knowledge of Jehovah's existence which is plain to be seen for all who choose to see. He uses an appeal to the atheist's highest authority, his own mind.

If you are interested, I'd suggest starting by researching the idea of Universal Law, or Universal Morality. In my own experience, it's one of the best works I've ever read, and it seems nigh on impossible to me that Lewis was not walking by Spirit.

OK here's the deal. The bible will convince no one who happens to be an atheist, first of all. So you must appeal to logic, because there are many things they take on faith which should be mutually exclusive if you're an atheist because faith does not lie in science. Let's say there really was a "big bang" even though there are many scientist who claim that observation contradicts this(Eric Lerner, Hans Alven). Where did the singularity come from? All the matter of the universe was suposedly contained in that infintesimally small object. How did it come to be? Are we to wait for the explanation of the evolution of the singularity after they have finally hashed out all the inconsistencies with the current universe. Not to mention, according to the big bang, somewhere around 95% of the universe is comprised of "dark matter". Unobservable, purely theorectical matter that just must be there, otherwise the theory, doesn't work. That's called faith my friend. "Just believe until we can explain it for you."

Here is another interesting fact: Most of the studies are done at major universities. Many observations of the fossil record will show that species appear out of nowhere, remain unchanged for the duration of their existence, and then slip into extinction. You will never hear of these studies as such, because it doesn't conform to the theory. Therefore it won't be published and if you don't get published you will never get tenure. This is nothing but vested interest forcing studies to be tweaked for selfish reasons(money primarily). At a conferece of Darwinists years ago a French mathmetician suggested that the theory doesn't allow for adequate time if you take into account all the modifications it would have taken for the eye to reach it's present state. Do you know what the moderators response was?? He told the mathematician was missing the point. The fact was that evolution had occurred, we just need to figure out how. When confronted with the language of science, mathematics, they fell back upon faith. That's called religion my friend!!! There are many instances such as this but in the interest of at least some brevity, I'll move on.

Now the big picture. Bill Mahr is somewhat of a satirist, and I actually find him entertaining. Satire is about looking at the world and using sarcasm, ridicule, derision, etc. to expose and/or denounce things one does not agree with. If we are nothing but a cosmic anomaly, I don't think Bill has a leg to stand on. Here's why: We "evolved" against inconceivable, unfathomable odds. Technically we shouldn't even be here mathematically speaking. Here we are nonetheless, but in time, according to the theory certain things will come to pass that are unavoidable. Humans will evolve to a state unrecognizable from the present state. Sometime after that the species will become extinct, because they all do. Long after, our sun will go through is death throws and kill all life on earth. The solar system will die. And some day eons from now the last light of the universe will flicker out. Everything and everyone you hold dear and important, any love you had, any accompishment you were proud of, any good will you had for your offspring, your legacy, everyone's legacy will have amounted to nothing but an infintesimally tiny, inconsequential, meaningless blip in an infinite stream of time. Is that scenario worthy of your faith??

Also it makes morals and ethics absolutely irrelevant, unless you can show conclusive proof of when and where and how these concepts evolved, because I will not take it on faith. We then live in a world wher the predator can separtate the weak, lame, or young from the herd in order to feed upon them and no one can complain, just as in the animal world. If Bill Mahr thinks religion is destructive and silly, what would happen if he found out that those in power were nothing but atheists using religion as a tool in order to maintain there position on the food chain, exert their greater fitness, and assure the survival of their section of the species. Will he then accept them as his rightful lords?? I think he should buck up and practice what he preaches. You don't get the "right" to complain, we are then not all created equal. You take what you're given by those above you. You can't cry about them lying about their convictions since lying is fair game. You can't blather about them perpetrating wars and all sorts of injustice, for there is only one rule.....might makes right.

Jehovah doesn't want to force anyone to serve him or even believe in his existence. All we can do is look at the options and decide where to put our faith. Ask Bill Mahr if he can assure you that the same atrocities we've seen throughout history will not simply continue until our own sun burns out our existence.

Evolutionist Christopher Hitchins has said that he thinks religion is a deadly threat to the survival of the species....doesn't evolution by definition require the same thing??

Take care brother.
