The prophets are God's detectives seeking for a lost treasure. The degree of their effectiveness is determined by their measure of unpopularity. Compromise is not known to them.

They have no price tags.

They are totally "otherworldly."

They are unquestionably controversial.

They march to another drummer.

They breathe the rarefied air of inspiration.

They are "seers" who come to lead the blind.

They live in the heights of God and comes into the valley with a "thus said the Lord."

They share some of the foreknowledge of God and so are aware of impending judgment.

They live in "splendid isolation."

They are forthright and outright, but claim no birthright.

Their message is "repent, be reconciled to God or else."

Their prophecies are parried.

Their truth brings torment, but their voice is never void.

They are the villain of today and the hero of tomorrow.

They are excommunicated while alive and exalted when dead.

They are a schoolmaster to bring men to Christ but few "make the grade" in their class.

They are friendless while living and famous when dead.

They are against the establishment in ministry; then established a saint by posterity.

They eat daily the bread of affliction while they minister, but feed the Bread of Life to those who listen.

They walk before men for days but have walked before God for years.

They are a scourge to the nations before they are killed by the nations.

They announce, pronounce, and denounce.

They have a heart like a volcano and words like fire.

They talk to men about God.

They carry the lamp of truth among the heretics while lampooned by men.

They face God before they face men, but are self-effacing.

They hide with God in the secret place, but have nothing to hide in the marketplace.

They are naturally sensitive but supernaturally spiritual.

They have passion, purpose, and pugnacity.

They are ordained of God but disdained by men.
