The Discussion Board supports what is known as Subscriptions to Topics. This allows you to follow specific topics that may be of special interest to you. For example, if you post a question wherein you ask for others' views, you typically may want to "subscribe" to that Topic so that when someone responds, you will get an email notice and can visit the Discussion Board to read their response.
You will only receive one email notification per Subscription, notifying you that a Subscribed Topic has a new post. This resets every time you visit the Discussion Board, however.
In some cases, you will not want to receive email notifications for Topics that you are Subscribed to. This brief tutorial will explain how to Subscribe and Unsubscribe from Topics.
Subscribing to a Topic that YOU started
Step 1: Start a New Topic. Scroll down towards the bottom, where you should see a box like this:

Step 2: Using the drop-down box, select which method you would like to use for your Subscription.
That's it. Submit your new topic or post!
Managing Your Subscriptions: Unsubscribing
Step 1: Click on Personal CP in the Personal Menu, located in the left-hand column of the Discussion Board site. This will take you to your Personal Control Panel.
Step 2: Find the section titled Subscribed Threads or New Subscribed Threads:

Step 3: You can click on Unsubscribe to cancel your subscription to the specific Topic right from here.
That's it.

Step 1: Click on the Topic that you would like to Subscribe to.
Step 2: Click on Thread Tools.

Step 3: The Drop-Down Menu allows you to Subscribe to the Topic/Thread. If you are already subscribed, it will allow you to Unsubscribe from it.
Step 4: (If Subscribing) You will be given the available options as part of your Subscription process.

Step 5: Choose your preferred method of Notification, and then click Add Subscription.
That's it! You're now subscribed to that Topic/Thread
