(Malachi 1:3). . .Esau I have hated; and I finally made his mountains a desolated waste and his inheritance for the jackals of [the] wilderness.”
Jehovah is a loving person who is slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness. He even tells us that regarding the wicked:
(Ezekiel 18:23) . . .“‘Do I take any delight at all in the death of someone wicked,’ is the utterance of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘[and] not in that he should turn back from his ways and actually keep living?’.
Nevertheless in the book of Malachi we're told
(Malachi 1:3). . . Esau I have hated. . .".
Why would a person such as Jehovah actually bother to hate someone? After all whether we obey or not, we cannot add or take away anything from God. Obey or disobey, the consequences are ultimately ours alone for in the end God will repay us each according to our works.
(Romans 2:6) And he will render to each one according to his works:
Nevertheless, Esau seems to receive punishment that is not proportionate with his transgressions, after all there is no record of Esau doing anything as gross as others later did in Israel. So why is he hated? To discern the reason it may prove useful to recount the history of Esau starting with Abraham.
The bible tells us that Jehovah called Abraham out of his homeland and directed him to a new territory in order to use Abraham in the eventual fulfillment of his purpose to redeem humankind and vindicate his name. Upon leaving Abraham was accompanied by his father and his nephew Lot, among others. Eventually Lot and Abraham parted ways because their separate households and possessions were becoming too large to co-exist in the same area. Lot therefore moved his household into the region of Sodom and Gomorrah only to later flee in order to avoid the regions destruction by Jehovah. Lots two daughters then gave birth to their two sons by means of their father Lot. The two sons were Moab and Ben-ammi, the progenitors of Moab and Ammon respectively.
Jehovah made covenants with Abraham which his son Isaac inherited. Isaac had twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau being the elder was the lawful heir to covenants that Jehovah made with Abraham; however the bible tells us that Esau exchanged his inheritance for a bowl of soup.
(Hebrews 12:16-17). . . nor anyone not appreciating sacred things, like Esau, who in exchange for one meal gave away his rights as firstborn. 17 For YOU know that afterward also when he wanted to inherit the blessing he was rejected, for, although he earnestly sought a change of mind with tears, he found no place for it. . .
Esau became the progenitor of the nation of Edom.
Jacob, who appreciated the inheritance and received it, became the progenitor of the nation of Israel.
Israel on its way from Egypt to the Promised Land, were shown no regard by descendants of Esau, Moab and Ben-ammi, whom now constituted nations. Having settled in the Promised Land, Israel soon embarked on a path of disobedience to Jehovah and were eventually exiled to Babylon. Regarding Edom’s, Moab’s and Ammon’s reaction to Israel’s well deserved plight the bible says:
(Ezekiel 35:5) . . .you proved to have an indefinitely lasting enmity and you kept delivering the sons of Israel over to the power of the sword, in the time of their disaster, in the time of [their] final error.”’
(Obadiah 10-14) . . .Because of the violence to your brother Jacob, …… 11 In the day when you stood off on the side, in the day when strangers took his military force into captivity and [when] outright foreigners entered his gate and over Jerusalem they cast lots, you also were like one of them. 12 “And you ought not to watch the sight in the day of your brother, in the day of his misfortune; and you ought not to rejoice at the sons of Judah in the day of their perishing; and you ought not to maintain a big mouth in the day of [their] distress. 13 You ought not to come into the gate of my people in the day of their disaster. You, even you, ought not to peer at his calamity in the day of his disaster; and you ought not to thrust out a hand upon his wealth in the day of his disaster. 14 And you ought not to stand at the parting of the ways, in order to cut off his escapees; and you ought not to hand over his survivors in the day of distress.
(Jeremiah 49:1) . . .For the sons of Am′mon this is what Jehovah has said: “Are there no sons that Israel has, or is there no inheritor that he has? Why is it that Mal′cam has taken possession of Gad, and his own people have taken up dwelling in [Israel’s] very cities?”
It’s not as if things weren’t bad enough for the Israelites during the Babylonian siege that the Edomites, Moabites and Ammonites needed to add to Israel’s woes. The scripture describe conditions for the Jews as the most horrid imaginable:
(Deuteronomy 28:49-57) . . .Jehovah will raise up against you a nation far away, from the end of the earth…, a nation whose tongue you will not understand, 50 a nation fierce in countenance, who will not be partial to an old man or show favor to a young man. And they will indeed besiege you within all your gates until your high and fortified walls in which you are trusting fall in all your land, yes, they will certainly besiege you within all your gates in all your land,… Then you will have to eat the fruit of your belly, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, …., because of the tightness and stress with which your enemy will hem you in. 54 “As for the very delicate and dainty man among you, his eye will be evil-inclined toward his brother and his cherished wife and the remainder of his sons whom he has remaining, 55 so as not to give one of them any of the flesh of his sons that he will eat, because he has nothing at all remaining to him because of the tightness and stress with which your enemy will hem you in within all your gates. 56 As for the delicate and dainty woman among you who never attempted to set the sole of her foot upon the earth for being of dainty habit and for delicateness, her eye will be evil-inclined toward her cherished husband and her son and her daughter, 57 even toward her afterbirth that comes out from between her legs and toward her sons whom she proceeded to bear, because she will eat them in secrecy for the want of everything because of the tightness and stress with which your enemy will hem you in within your gates.
(Ezekiel 5:10) . . .“‘“Therefore fathers themselves will eat sons in the midst of you, and sons themselves will eat their fathers, and I will execute in you acts of judgment and scatter all the remainder of you to every wind.”’
People resorting to eating the bodies of dead persons if not to outright cannibalism in order to survive! One can perhaps then imagine why Jehovah would be moved to hate Esau’s descendants for taking the lead in showing animosity to Israel their brother, if indeed that’s what they did, that is, take the lead.
Perhaps it has already become apparent that all this is of prophetic significance.
In order to understand the meaning of these events we need to appreciate a few principals from the bible. Namely, that these events describe what will happen to the Israel of God.
(1 Corinthians 10:11) . . .Now these things went on befalling them as examples, and they were written for a warning to us upon whom the ends of the systems of things have arrived.
(Hebrews 11:20). . . By faith also Isaac blessed Jacob and E′sau concerning things to come. . .
Esau was heir to the promise that Jehovah made to Abraham and he rejected it for something of no lasting benefit. His decedents demonstrated undeserved hatred to their brothers the Israelites. These then fittingly prefigure those that do the same; that is those that reject the promised inheritance for a temporary benefit and, also show hatred for their brothers.
Moab and Ammon represent those that are related to the Israel of God but who are not heirs to the promise but nevertheless show the same hostility to the Israel of God
This all happens during the period starting from Satan’s ouster from heaven and running to the end of the Great Tribulation. Jesus says of this time:
(Matthew 24:9-12). . 10 Then, also, many will be stumbled and will betray one another and will hate one another. 11 ……. and because of the increasing of lawlessness the love of the greater number will cool off.
(Mark 13:12) . . .Furthermore, brother will deliver brother over to death, and a father a child, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death;
(Luke 21:16). . . Moreover, YOU will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of YOU to death;
While the family members spoken of by Jesus can include one’s blood relations, Jesus primarily meant one’s spiritual family that is fellow members of the Christian congregation.
(Mark 10:29-30) . . .Jesus said: “Truly I say to YOU men, No one has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the good news 30 who will not get a hundredfold now in this period of time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, with persecutions, and in the coming system of things everlasting life. . .
Stated plainly then, some spirit anointed Christians will apostatize and be joined by non-spirit anointed Christians in turning against faithful Christians, both anointed and non-anointed, in order to survive the impending calamity. It’s as if history is repeating itself and indeed it is as these ones are now eating the flesh of their relatives by offering them up for sacrifice in order to preserve their own lives.
The book of Daniel speak of this and shows that such a strategy on the part of Esau, Moab and Ammon’s descendants has brief success , temporary benefits, just like Esau’s soup:
(Daniel 11:30-32) . . .And he will actually go back and hurl denunciations against the holy covenant and act effectively; and he will have to go back and will give consideration to those leaving the holy covenant. 31 ……. 32 “And those who are acting wickedly against [the] covenant, he will lead into apostasy by means of smooth words.
(Daniel 11:41) . . .. But these are the ones that will escape out of his hand, E′dom and Mo′ab and the main part of the sons of Am′mon.
Apostate Christians and those that join them will only receive to temporary respite though. Jehovah has assured their destruction and punishment. Destruction for Edom, punishment for Moab and Ammon.
(Jeremiah 48:40-46) . . .“For this is what Jehovah has said, ‘Look! Just like an eagle that pounces, someone must also spread his wings over Mo′ab. 41 The towns will actually be captured, and her own strong places will certainly be seized. ……..’” 42 “‘And Mo′ab will certainly be annihilated from being a people, …… 43 Dread and the hollow and the trap are upon you, O inhabitant of Mo′ab,’ ….. 44 ‘Anyone fleeing because of the dread will fall into the hollow; and anyone coming up out of the hollow will be caught in the trap.’ “‘…….. For a very fire will certainly go forth out of Hesh′bon, and a flame from the midst of Si′hon; and it will devour the temples of Mo′ab and the crown of the head of the sons of uproar.’ 46 … The people of Che′mosh have perished. For your sons have been taken as captives and your daughters as captives.
(Jeremiah 49:2) . . .Therefore, look! there are days coming,’ is the utterance of Jehovah, ‘and I will cause the alarm signal of war to be heard even against Rab′bah of the sons of Am′mon; and she will certainly become a mound of a desolate waste, and her dependent towns themselves will be set aflame in the very fire. . .
Regarding Edom:
(Obadiah 18) . . .And the house of Jacob must become a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of E′sau as stubble; and they must set them ablaze and devour them. And there will prove to be no survivor to the house of E′sau; for Jehovah himself has spoken [it].
It’s worth noting the difference in outcomes for Esau’s descendants and those of Moab and Ammon.
Moab and Ammon are to be restored, that is, resurrected into the paradise
(Jeremiah 48:47) 47 And I will gather the captive ones of Mo′ab in the final part of the days,’ is the utterance of Jehovah.. . .
(Jeremiah 49:6) . . .“‘But afterward I shall gather the captive ones of the sons of Am′mon,’ is the utterance of Jehovah.”
(Romans 6:23). . . For the wages sin pays is death, . . .
Whereas Edom is lost forever.
(Jeremiah 49:17-18) 17 “And E′dom must become an object of astonishment. Everyone passing along by her will stare in astonishment and whistle on account of all her plagues. 18 Just as in the overthrow of Sod′om and Go·mor′rah and her neighbor [towns],” Jehovah has said, “no man will dwell there, and no son of mankind will reside in her as an alien.
Sodom and Gomorrah being symbols of everlasting destruction:
(2 Peter 2:6) . . .by reducing the cities Sod′om and Go·mor′rah to ashes he condemned them, setting a pattern for ungodly persons of things to come;
(Jude 7) . . .So too Sod′om and Go·mor′rah and the cities about them, …. are placed before [us] as a [warning] example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire. . .
To understand the reason for the difference in treatment meted out to Edom and that given to Ammon and Moab one needs to appreciate the significance of being anointed with Jehovah’s Holy Spirit. Jesus says of such one:
(Luke 12:48) . . .Indeed, everyone to whom much was given, much will be demanded of him; and the one whom people put in charge of much, they will demand more than usual of him.
(Hebrews 6:4-6) 4 For it is impossible as regards those who have once for all been enlightened, and who have tasted the heavenly free gift, and who have become partakers of holy spirit, 5 and who have tasted the fine word of God and powers of the coming system of things, 6 but who have fallen away, to revive them again to repentance, because they impale the Son of God afresh for themselves and expose him to public shame. . .
Spirit anointed Christians have tasted the powers of the coming system of things when they partook of God’s holy spirit. If any of those then rebel and become apostate they in a sense impale Christ again and expose him to shame.
(Hebrews 10:26-31) . . .For if we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left, 27 but [there is] a certain fearful expectation of judgment and [there is] a fiery jealousy that is going to consume those in opposition. 28 …. how … severe a punishment, do YOU think, will the man be counted worthy who has trampled upon the Son of God and who has esteemed as of ordinary value the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and who has outraged the spirit of undeserved kindness with contempt? 30 …”
(Matthew 7:6) . . .Do not give what is holy to dogs, neither throw YOUR pearls before swine, that they may never trample them under their feet and turn around and rip YOU open. . .
Small wonder then why Jehovah hates Esau.
Jehovah is a loving person who is slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness. He even tells us that regarding the wicked:
